About Dodge / Ram Engines
Dodge and Ram have a rich engine heritage spanning decades. The Hemi V8, revived in 2003, became the heart of Ram trucks and performance vehicles. The partnership with Cummins, beginning in 1989, created the most sought-after diesel pickup truck combination in history. The Magnum series and modern Pentastar V6 round out a diverse engine family.
The Dodge-Cummins partnership began in 1989 when Dodge put the 5.9L Cummins inline-6 diesel in the Ram pickup, creating an instant legend. The first-generation 12-valve Cummins (1989-1998) is still one of the most sought-after diesel trucks ever made. The Hemi V8, originally developed in the 1950s and revived in 2003 with the 5.7L, brought muscle car performance to the truck market. Ram became its own brand in 2010, separating from Dodge to focus on trucks and commercial vehicles.
Dodge / Ram Engine Buying Guide
When purchasing a remanufactured Dodge/Ram engine, the VIN's 8th digit identifies the engine code. For Hemi engines, verify whether your vehicle has MDS (Multi-Displacement System) as this affects the engine configuration. For Cummins diesel options, see our dedicated Cummins page for detailed buying guidance.
